I built a background-music application that connects an online audio stream to an existing PA system.

From an online audio source to existing PA speakers, with a paging adapter connecting the network and physical audio system.

An online stream, existing speakers

The network and PA system were already in place. I built the background-music application, configured its server environment and connected it to the receiving equipment.

An operator can choose a station or enter a stream address. The application checks the address format and checks web-stream reachability before starting.

The paging adapter makes the connection

I used VLC to convert the incoming audio and send it as an RTP multicast stream. The PA paging adapter listens for that stream and feeds the speakers through an amplifier.

I configured the adapter, its connections to the PBX and PA/amplifier environment, and the surrounding PBX behaviour. The adapter is also a PBX extension, with emergency paging and alerts configured to take priority over background music.

Start, stop, listen

The application provides start and stop controls, status messages, optional local listening and a configurable scheduled restart.

Local listening can be stopped without stopping the outgoing stream.
